Once Upon A Tide at National Museum of Singapore

Once Upon A Tide is a maritime-themed exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore, commemorating Singapore's 60th year of independence. Running from May 2025 to October 2026, the exhibition explores the nation's deep-rooted history as a port city through over 350 artefacts and interactive installations. Entry to the exhibition itself is free, though general museum admission applies, with tickets starting from $7 for non-residents.

The exhibition is divided into five sections, each using immersive mediums to showcase Singapore's evolution. Visitors begin in 'Always on the Map,' greeted by digitally projected waves and ancient maps dating back to 1525, and can try the 'Find Your Singapore' digital experience. The 'River Road' exhibit offers a virtual journey along the Singapore River, allowing participants to navigate historical waters.

A significant section is dedicated to the stories of immigrants, told through artefacts like appointment letters and photographs, providing insight into the lives of early settlers. Notable artefacts on display include a handwritten 1822 letter by Sir Stamford Raffles and a 1976 panoramic oil painting of the Singapore skyline by artist Lai Kui Fang.

Interactive elements include a gameshow-styled quiz testing knowledge of Singlish phrases and local dishes, and highlights of Singaporean icons such as pianist Margaret Leng Tan and athletes like Loh Kean Yew. Additional programmes, such as free craft workshops and a scavenger hunt, are available, particularly during the opening weekend, enhancing the family-friendly experience.
