Blueprints of the Ocean (Fish Ecology + Gyotaku Workshop)

This workshop introduces participants to Gyotaku, the traditional Japanese art of fish printing. Using real by-catch fish and specialized inks, attendees create detailed prints that capture the intricate patterns of scales and fins.

The activity is not merely artistic; it serves as a gateway to understanding marine ecology and promoting sustainable fishing practices.

By working directly with fish that would otherwise be discarded, participants gain a tangible appreciation for the value of all marine life and the importance of reducing waste in the fishing industry.

The workshop is led by The Untamed Paths, an organization dedicated to connecting people with nature through hands-on experiences.

Throughout the session, instructors guide attendees step-by-step in the printing technique, from preparing the fish and applying ink to pressing paper onto the specimen.

The resulting prints serve as both artistic creations and scientific records, reflecting the unique characteristics of each fish.

Participants also learn about the life history of the species used, the role of by-catch in ecosystem health, and how traditional practices like Gyotaku can foster a deeper respect for the ocean.

The workshop is scheduled for three separate dates in May and June, allowing flexibility for attendees. Each session covers the same content, so choosing one date is sufficient. The fee for participation is $25, covering all materials and instruction.
